AI@LAB: AI Lab for Teacher Education Students

An AI lab is being designed and partially tested for master’s-level teacher education students, where they will systematically engage with various AI tools, apply them to subject-specific problems, evaluate them, and reflect on their use. This initiative builds on the students’ experiences from the digital module while also promoting the targeted development of AI competencies in preparation for their future professional requirements. The focus is on AI tools for lesson planning, the development of teaching materials, and the provision of feedback on student work, which have been identified as particularly relevant for (prospective) teachers.

The design of the AI lab will be implemented in two phases: In the first phase, the key players and stakeholders at BUW will be identified, informed, and integrated. This involves determining the future professional requirements for prospective teachers regarding (subject-specific) AI competencies, as well as clarifying how AI competency development can be implemented into subject curricula through an AI lab and what resources are needed for this. In the second step, two teaching units will be designed and tested for the German language course (planning lessons with AI tools during the practicum semester, and evaluating and assessing texts with AI).
